utility professionals, inc (UPI) is growing and we are searching for an experienced Land/Field Surveyor to provide survey expertise in conjunction with our Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) locating activity. This position is based in our Manassas, VA office.  This is a field position whose duties include operating both survey data collectors and SUE locating equipment. This is a great position for someone with the demonstrated ability for geophysical prospecting for underground utilities.   Experience in subsurface utility engineering and use of SUE equipment would be a plus, be we will provide training! 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Working knowledge and proficiency with modern survey devices and modern survey methods, including competence in operating conventional total stations and data collector to include setting up, modifying settings as need arises, and ability to perform simple calculations, compute offsets and points
  • Coordinate survey activities in connection with the Subsurface Utility Engineering work;
  • Proficiency and/or the ability to become proficient with modern SUE equipment;
  • Understand and adhere to all safety guidelines and requirements of UPI and client;
  • Participate in daily briefings/debriefings and ensure all tasks are being addressed in the field;
  • Comprehend and interpret utility and highway design plans, maps and as-built drawings;
  • Oversee and coordinate the maintenance and operation of vehicles, equipment, tools and supplies;
  • Represent and communicate on behalf of the company and crew when encountering third parties in the field;

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Proficient knowledge of SUE practices and principles to use daily in handling projects;
  • Minimum one (1) to four (4) years' experience as a Field Surveyor or four years in the successful application of geophysical equipment in utility locating such as for a contract utility locating firm or a major utility company
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, and related personnel
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and overtime as needed
  • Physical ability to work outdoors on project sites that may extend several miles, carry equipment, and walk throughout the day.
  • CST Level II required or ability to obtain within one (1) year
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
