utility professionals, inc (UPI) is growing and we are searching for a Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Tech and/or Locator (Damage Protection Tech).  This is a field position whose duties include operating field Subsurface Utility equipment, a demonstrated ability for geophysical prospecting for underground utilities and supports overall crew activities.  We offer a competitive salary and benefits package and a team atmosphere with the opportunity for individual growth and advancement.

A qualified candidate will have field experience in subsurface utility engineering and use of SUE equipment.  Knowledge of jurisdictional and industry requirements is required.  Excellent oral and written communication skills are a must. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Select and apply the appropriate geophysical prospecting equipment to accurately designate non-complex underground utility layouts;
  • Proficiency and/or the ability to become proficient with modern SUE equipment;
  • Possess knowledge, education and/or work experience relating to typical SUE marking techniques including sweep, direct connects, indirect connects and induction methods;
  • Handle equipment maintenance and supplies;
  • Check and clean instruments and accessory pieces after use;
  • Check the general operative conditions of assigned vehicle, including gas, oil and tire pressure; secure vehicle and equipment at the end of the work day, remove and store instruments and other valuables in the office;
  • Inventory supplies and restock as needed; identify/obtain-needed supplies required for daily work assignments;
  • Transport equipment in a timely and efficient manner;
  • Understand and adhere to all safety guidelines and requirements of UPI and client;
  • Participate in daily briefings/debriefings and ensure all tasks are being addressed in the field;
  • Comprehend and interpret utility and highway design plans, maps and as-built drawings;
  • Supervise all crew activities as assigned
  • Oversee and coordinate the maintenance and operation of vehicles, equipment, tools and supplies;
  • Perform "On-Call" notifications as well as the ability to communicate and coordinate with utility company representatives;
  • Represent and communicate on behalf of the company and crew when encountering third parties in the field;
  • Coordinate survey activities in connection with the Subsurface Utility Engineering work;

Qualifications:

  •  High School diploma or equivalent;
  •  Proficient knowledge of SUE practices and principles to use daily in handling projects;
  •  Minimum one (1) to four (4) years' experience as a SUE Locator I or four years in the successful application of geophysical   equipment in utility locating such as for a contract utility locating firm or a major utility company
  •  Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, and related personnel
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and overtime as needed
  • Physical ability to work outdoors on project sites that may extend several miles, carry equipment, and walk throughout the day.
